COUPLE AND FAMILY OF ORIGIN INTENSIVES
Don’t let the word intensive intimidate you! They are called “intensives” because significant change can be accomplished in a short amount of time. (Please see the two descriptions below.)
FAMILY OF ORIGIN INTENSIVES
What are family of origin consultations and what are they intended to accomplish?
The family of origin is the first real group any of us belong to … a group that has a continuing influence on how we think, act, feel and relate to ourselves and others across the life span. Because of the emotional significance of this original group, it is important to support family members in “going back” to the group to increase understanding, explore possibilities, acknowledge the different realities within the same family and build relationships for the present and future.
Family of origin consultations have the potential to enhance relationships within the family and in the personal lives of individuals within the family. Although families hold a wealth of critical stories over the years and very important relationships, it is very rare that family members have intentional conversations together about their life, history and relationships with a focus on acknowledging strengths and renegotiating relationships for the future.
In these meetings, family members come together in a live encounter of direct address around issues that matter in the past, present and future. With the care, guidance and challenge of the family of origin consultant, family members discuss a variety of issues so that each family member’s thoughts and feelings may have the opportunity to be spoken and heard. As the conversations unfold, family issues dissolve, resolve or evolve into a deeper understanding.
COUPLE INTENSIVES
Sometimes, the intensive format option is better suited to a couple’s needs. These would be a series of 2-hour meetings held during a 2 or 3 day period rather than the usual weekly or bi-weekly sessions. There are scheduled, intentional break times to allow for reflection, rest and integration time. Intensives are best suited for couples wishing to address a particular impasse or who live at a distance, making weekly visits difficult.
